Butler University seeks a Disability Specialist to provide support for students with disabilities in a robust and growing disability services office. The Disability Specialist interprets disability-related documentation for all areas of disability so as to determine reasonable accommodations based on an understanding of applicable laws/regulations. This position engages in direct support of students, including academic coaching. The Disability Specialist must possess experience and sensitivity in working with people with disabilities and must maintain strict confidentiality as well as experience supporting students from underrepresented and marginalized backgrounds with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Review and interpret disability-related documentation for all areas of disability, conduct intake interviews and meetings with prospective students and families, and determine reasonable accommodations
Provide direct support services to students, including academic coaching and training on academic technology, monitor and track progress of SDS students in support of retention efforts, respond to and resolve student and faculty concerns, and make referrals as needed.
Provide assistance to Director/Assistant Director with disability/diversity related programming for faculty, staff, and students as directed.
Work with SDS team members and other relevant individuals on campus to coordinate and implement accommodations/ support services.
Serve as a resource to campus community regarding disability-related matters as directed
Other duties as assigned.
Master’s degree in special education, disability services, psychology, higher education, vocational rehabilitation, or other related field or bachelor’s degree with significant specialized experience
1-3 years of Higher education experience preferred; disability services experience preferred
Ability to interpret disability-related documentation/psychoeducational assessment reports
Ability to attend to extensive details under pressing time lines while maintaining compliance
Experience and sensitivity in working with people with disabilities
Possess excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving, time-management, multi-tasking, and writing skills
Experience supporting students from underrepresented and marginalized backgrounds with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion with a professional understanding of the intersectionality of identities in disability services.
