Position Overview

The College of Education (COE) at Butler University invites applications for a full-time, tenure track faculty position with an expected start date of August 2025. The successful candidate will teach courses and engage in scholarship in the area of literacy education, particularly as it relates to educator preparation and community engagement. We are seeking a dynamic faculty member eager to collaborate on initiatives and partnerships related to literacy teaching and learning with our community, school, and state; and contribute to a continually evolving vision for literacy education within the COE. We are particularly interested in applicants from identity groups currently underrepresented in teacher preparation within higher education institutions.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 9 credit hours of on campus courses each semester.  Courseload may include early childhood, elementary, and middle level literacy methods courses, courses focused on dyslexia and reading interventions, including for multilingual learners, student teacher supervision, and classes in the COE and University cores.
  • Advise undergraduate students
  • Supervise students during field-based settings
  • Collaborate with colleagues and community partners to design and reimagine courses and programming with a focus on careful integration of reading sciences and promotion of educational equity
  • Produce scholarship aligned with COE expectations for positive progress toward tenure
  • Pursue grant funded work with community and school partners
  • Provide service to the College, University, and professional communities

Required Qualifications 

  • Earned doctorate from an accredited university in Reading and Literacy Studies, Curriculum & Instruction, Teacher Education, or related discipline with significant coursework in the area of literacy instruction by contract start date
  • Experience and excellence in teaching in educational settings at elementary levels in the United States, including specific experiences and/or expertise working with students who are multilingual learners
  • Evidence of sustained commitment and action towards diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational settings
  • Experience working with students and colleagues from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Alignment with the COE Shared Commitments and the mission of Butler University.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated commitment to interrupting and eliminating inequitable outcomes, removing barriers, and creating inclusive conditions for individuals and communities regardless of any predictive identities.
  • Knowledge of and experience in reading instruction, including evidence-based reading instruction, the sociopolitical context of reading instruction, and the articulation of current reading research and policy into effective instruction. 
  • Experience partnering with schools and organizations to support literacy development in children, youth, and adults in local communities.  
  • Experience and expertise in the practice and teaching of literacy education to pre-service and in-service educators and/or substantive preparation in the teaching of literacy to K-12 learners
  • Experience and expertise in teaching reading to K-6 learners
  • Ability to support learners from a variety of backgrounds with strong, student-centered, inclusive instructional methods
  • Proficiency in another language in addition to English
  • Proven success or potential for success in scholarship that is commensurate with the expectations within a "teacher-scholar" model
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
