Research Assistant (Full-time w/benefits)

Position Overview

Butler University is currently accepting applications for a full-time grant funded Research Assistant in the laboratory of Dr. Jennifer Kowalski in the Department of Biological Sciences. This position is currently funded through July 31, 2025. The Kowalski lab uses a combination of genetics, behavior, molecular biology, biochemistry, fluorescence microscopy to study neuromuscular function and signaling regulation in the roundworm, Caenorhabditis elegans.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform general lab maintenance, including solution and media preparation
  • Cultivate and maintain C. elegans strains
  • Plan and execute experiments using genetics, molecular biology (PCR, restriction digest, gel electrophoresis, RNA extraction, qRT-PCR, CRISPR-based editing, DNA microinjections), basic biochemistry (immunoprecipitations, Western blotting), behavioral experiments, fluorescence microscopy, and quantitative image analysis
  • Assist with the training and management of undergraduate researchers in the lab
  • Help develop and maintain databases of worm, bacterial, and plasmid stocks

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field required (or relevant work experience)
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel
  • At least (2) years of previous research experience
  • Experience working with C. elegans, molecular biology, biochemistry and/or fluorescence microscopy

This is a grant-funded position that can start as early as August 2024.
