Position Overview

The Student Development Specialist/Academic Advisor Provides direct service to undergraduate students through individualized academic advising, success coaching, and mentoring, as well as assists with the development, implementation, and delivery of programs, classes, and interventions that support student development, persistence, and success.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized academic success coaching and mentoring to undergraduate students seeking to improve academic performance. Utilize developmental approach to assist students in exploring academic and career options, making informed decisions, making healthy transitions to college, create educational plans for improvement, and make referrals as appropriate. Counsel walk-in students and faculty advisor referrals from all academic colleges on academic and career options, transitioning majors, adding programs of study, course selection and academic planning.                                                                                
  • Create and disseminate resource materials, information, website content, and event promotions that support student development, persistence, and success. 
  • Teach academic success or major/career exploration courses, which includes developing curriculum materials, evaluating student work and providing feedback on student learning, assessing learning objectives/outcomes, etc.
  • Assist in or coordinate aspects related to the development, implementation, delivery, and assessment of programs, courses, support structures, and recruitment and retention initiatives in assigned areas, such as academic success workshops, individualized peer tutoring and study tables, targeted and at-risk outreach, major/career exploration programs and outreach, admission events, themed living community. 
  • Facilitate outreach efforts to both general student populations and identified cohorts, such as exploratory students, first-generation students, student athletes, students on academic probation, transfer students, etc.
  • Serve as the Student Success Center’s Butler Blue Scholars point person with a strong emphasis on 21st Century Scholars.         
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications 

  • Master's degree required
  • 3-5 years experience in academic advising, career counseling, success coaching, and/or teaching preferably post-secondary level

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Proficient in Spanish
