Position Overview

The Associate Director of Sustainability Education and Outreach supports campus-wide sustainability through the development, coordination, and management of curricular and co-curricular programming that engages faculty, staff, students, and the broader community. This will be accomplished by mentoring and coordinating the Sustainability Leadership Cohort internship program, serving as a sustainability expert for courses, leading staff and faculty-development workshops, establishing co-curricular programming, behavior change programs, and education interventions in collaboration with campus stakeholders, and potentially teaching courses.​ We are looking for a highly-motivated, creative, collaborative, and energetic individual to design high-impact behavior change programs that inspire our campus community to make positive change.

The Associate Director is a full-time, 12-month, on-site staff position that will work with a team of four full-time staff in the Office of Sustainability to advance the University's sustainability goals. The Office of Sustainability plays a central role in advancing and tracking environmental stewardship at Butler University. Through initiatives such as energy efficiency and clean energy, waste minimization and diversion, the Sustainability Leadership Cohort, campus farm, and Green Programs, the Office fosters a sense of responsibility and awareness among students, faculty, and staff. 

Responsibilities

​​40% Co-Curricular Student Engagement and Campus Events 

  • ​Plan, implement, and promote campus and community education, awareness, and engagement initiatives that improve sustainable living through educational, behavior change, and volunteer programs; ensure regular and meaningful collaboration with Student Government Association, student clubs, dining services, and Residence Life  
  • ​Ensure that Butler University serves as an educational resource to the wider community whenever feasible and appropriate through collaboration with local schools, neighborhood associations, and nonprofits  

  • ​Lead sustainability workshops for faculty, staff, and the Lifelong Learning Program; help develop and coordinate employee incentive/volunteer programs; oversee and encourage participation in the Green Office and Green Events programs 

​30% Teaching, Student Supervision, and Academic Collaboration 

  • ​Offer guidance and regular trainings to academic staff, faculty, and administrators to apply sustainability principles in classes, research, and interdisciplinary projects; catalyze symposia or external speakers 

  • ​Implement the Sustainability Leadership Cohort internship program; identify internal and external internship opportunities; recruit, select, onboard, and mentor student interns and volunteers 

  • ​Recruit participation in and track completion of sustainability curricular programs; regularly inventory sustainability courses to maintain accurate records  

  • ​Identify potential Living Lab projects that fulfill campus sustainability needs; recruit faculty and class engagement; provide support to classes  

  • ​Serve on the STES (Science, Technology and Environmental Studies) steering committee; potentially teach a course in STES when deemed appropriate and particularly impactful to campus sustainability 

​20% Planning, Reporting, and Communications 

  • ​Identify key metrics and develop tracking procedures for programs; coordinate and solicit data from various campus units for regular and timely AASHE-STARS (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education-Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System) submissions on curricular and outreach-related sustainability progress; utilize data to identify education and outreach goals; compile data, information, and graphics for internal and external stakeholder presentations to showcase results and progress 

​10% Staff Supervision 

  • ​Supervise the Farm Manager; monitor work performance and provide redirection as needed; ensure regular meetings; facilitate the setting of annual goals and reviews; foster professional development opportunities; encourage use of the farm as a curricular, co-curricular, and community resource​ 

Required Qualifications 

  • Master's degree in sustainability, environmental studies, ecological sciences, public affairs, or related field 
  • Minimum two years implementing sustainability programs in a higher education setting
  • Interest in and knowledge about sustainability
  • Passion for sustainability and educating others 
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion  
  • Ability to work independently and as a team leader and member 
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a time sensitive environment 
  • ​A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form 
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional internal and external teams across rank, identity, backgrounds, and experience 
  • Project management skills 
  • Technical skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook}​ 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience developing curriculum, teaching, and/or mentoring interns at the undergraduate level 
  • An interest or experience in learning and employing fundraising strategies 
  • Understanding of how to institutionalize sustainability efforts (preferably within an academic setting)
